Teeth discoloration is quite common, and the reasons can go as far back as childhood in some cases. Common causes include smoking or chewing tobacco, drinking excessive tea, coffee, cola drinks, taking antibiotics as a child, trauma, poor dental hygiene, and general aging.

Types of Teeth Whitening

For your convenience and budget, Canterra Dental has two methods of whitening available.

1. In-Office Spa Dent Teeth Whitening

The Spa Dent teeth whitening process is a quick, easy, and effective way of lightening tooth colour in one comfortable, relaxing in-office appointment. It takes very little time (approximately 1 hour), and is appropriate for many patients due to its extremely low sensitivity.

The process includes the use of a light-activated whitening gel that is placed in mouth trays. The gel’s active ingredients (hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide) are activated by an LED light that helps to break down tooth discolouration, essentially bleaching any coloured substance while keeping the structure of the tooth unchanged. The after-treatment steps include drinking only water for the first hour, avoiding staining substances such as coffee or berries for the next 24 hours, and brushing with take-home toothpaste for 5 nights. We recommend you make a touch-up appointment for 3-9 months in the future.

2. Take Home Whitening Kit

This method involves the preparation of custom mouth trays, created by taking a simple impression of your mouth. Our lab creates the trays that you will take home and use at your own leisure and convenience. Since the trays are custom fit to your mouth, there is never any risk of ingesting the whitening agents. Additionally, our whitening agents are more powerful than you can purchase over-the-counter, and therefore, the results will be more dramatic than store-bought whiting options. Since you use the whitening package at home and at your convenience, you have control over how white your tooth colour will ultimately become.

How do we Restore Teeth with Porcelain Veneers?

It can take two or more appointments to restore teeth with veneers. During the first appointment, we shape and roughen the teeth. We then take impressions of your teeth, which we use to make precise working models of your mouth. It is on these models that we artistically craft veneers to fit the prepared teeth. During the second appointment, we clean and polish the prepared teeth, and then use an adhesive to bond the veneers to the teeth. A harmless, high-intensity light hardens the adhesive. Once in place, veneers essentially become part of your teeth! You can use them like you would your own teeth because the bond is extremely strong. The final result is beautiful and natural-looking teeth.
